One of my favorite movies of all time is Limitless with Bradley Cooper as a down on his luck slacker who caught the break of a lifetime by happening upon a pill that increased his intelligence exponentially. Now I wouldn't say its the best acted or best written script, but the idea of increasing ones intelligence with a simple pill is something that resonated with me. Because what little boy or little slacker doesn't secretly desire a super power that gives him an edge in life?
Well unfortunately I did some research and there are no magic pills, or is there?
For thousands of years people have used the practice of meditation to increase there personal performance, spiritually, physically, and mentally. So when I was wiling away my day at work a few years back, much like you may be doing now :) I happened upon an article discussing how various famous and successful people used meditation to maximize and focus their talents, I was intrigued. I had never thought to meditate before. I was too busy running and frankly losing the rat race to take a step back and look within.
So that night I went home and carved out a little spot in my apartment and "tried" to meditate. What the article didn't explain, or maybe I just didn't realize or grasp, is how damn hard it would be to get my mind to shut the hell up! I went into it thinking, ok I'll focus on my breathe quite my mind and boom I'll be levitating in no time! HAHA what a crock of shit! My mind was racing like always, only this time I was sitting still long enough to watch this shit show circus in real time. I might have squeezed out a good 20 seconds in that initial 10 minutes of actual what I would describe as thoughtlessness. But, I felt what kind of potential it held so I stuck with it.
I began to feel a new level of focus and calmness about 2 weeks in I've never felt before. Whenever I'm telling people how awesome meditating is I always tell this story. So naturally I'm going to tell you guys because it blew my mind!
About 2 or 3 weeks into meditating for about 20 minutes on a regular basis (I kicked it up from 10 to 20) I went bowling on a 1st or 2nd date with this girl I started talking to. I was all excited about the progress I was making with my meditation practice and she was skeptical at best, giving me complete "side eye". Now I'm not very good at bowling, actually I pretty terrible but I said to her ok look, I'm going to center myself and focus. I shit you not I threw 7 strikes in a row! I hadn't had one strike before that. Needless to say it blew both of our minds.
Now meditation has dozens of benefits, but the ability to calm your mind at will and laser focus in on the task at hand is my personal favorite. Maybe you will find another favorite like lowered blood pressure or improved mood or self acceptance. Meditation is not easy. Meditation takes a time commitment of about 20 minutes per day for non-monks :) Meditation is at times frustrating but mostly meditation is one of the best beneficial practices that I have incorporated into my life.
So I challenge you to carve out a 20 minute block of time in your day and a peaceful spot in your home and give yourself a true gift that keeps on giving. Until then I'm going to keep working on this levitation thing!
Please like and share :)
Best of life, Kris
