"Dear Past, Thanks for all the lessons. Dear Future, I'm ready!"
Don't you sometimes wish you could take an eraser to your life? Maybe not a wholesale deletion of your past but a precision placed instrument where you could erase certain hurts or mistakes.
I sometimes wish I did. Some past pains were big some were small, all I wish I could have learned from reading a book or watching someone else go through it. But nope that's not how life works. Those are my scars. Those are your scars.
Even though you can't hit the delete button on your hurts, you can let go. You do have the power to release the shackles of the pain and begin to enjoy the life you're living in the here and now.
First you must make the decision to let go. I know this sounds obvious but sometimes we have the urge to self sabotage ourselves because we've only known one way of living. This is a tremendous pitfall in the journey to self-development. You start making progress and its unfamiliar territory so the desire for the familiar creeps in. Don't fall for it! Make the decision to be happy!
Next you must forgive yourself or whoever brought the pain into your life. Every situation is different so I'm not going to act like this is going to be easy. Actually, odds are its going to tough as shit, but the power of forgiveness is tremendous. Holding on to hate and hurt is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die, to paraphrase Buddha. And it leads to the dark side!
Sometimes its easier to forgive someone else than it is to forgive yourself. Some of us have a tendency to think we just aren't good enough and everything is our fault, Eeyore. Its easy to demonize yourself or others when you are caught in the trap of past regrets. However, if you can realize that we all are just humans prone to error, it becomes easier to let that hurt go. Plus, once you release the anger, hurt, and resentment, a lightness of spirit will begin to set in and joy will take its place.
Which brings me to my next point. Learn to live in the present. I hate to keep harping on this, actually I don't, but meditation is a great tool for mindfulness and living in the present. It is extremely difficult to live in the past when you are locked into the right now. Once you make up your mind to let go of past mistakes and focus on the now, slowly but surely your future will begin to shape into a reality that will make all the hurt and missteps seem worth it. Don't keep re-watching the same old mental movies, push play on the moment you're in right now!
Finally, and this one may be the hardest of them all, but let go of people that are no longer serving your highest needs. There's a great quote "Everyone that comes with you can't go with you." and man is that true. Realize that most people only need to be in your life for a certain season, so don't be afraid to release people into their destiny. Allow people to flow in and out of your life.
Some people may be holding you back and not even mean to or realize it. There is no need to point the finger and play the blame game. Just be thankful for the good times and move on. Your life is too short and precious to spend with people who don't bring out your best.
Look, we all have pain in our past. No matter how much money, power, fame or friends you have everybody has hurts they are dealing with. My desire for you is to move on from it. To stop being a victim and realize that you have so much to be thankful for. There are a lot of people who haven't made it as far as you have. So let go of the past and grab a hold of the joy and love that your today has to offer!
Happiness it will bring you! :)
Best of Life, Kris
